DVD (Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc) is an optical storage medium. DVDs are used to record and store data, video or audio. DVDs have a similar structure to CDs, but have more data storage capacity. A DVD can be two-sided and double-layered. Double-sided DVDs can store data on both surfaces, while double-layer DVDs have a two-layer structure on each surface, with each layer storing data. Thanks to these features, DVDs have more data storage capacity. DVDs are available in different formats. The most commonly used DVD formats are DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD-ROM. DVD-R and DVD+R are write-once DVDs. DVD-RW and DVD+RW are re-writable DVDs. DVD-ROM is a read-only format. DVDs are used for a variety of purposes, such as watching movies on home theater systems, storing data or games on computers, and creating music or photo albums. DVDs typically use the MPEG-2 video and Dolby Digital audio format to provide high-quality video and audio.
